Done with acrylic, graphite and coloured pencils. I made a sort of sketch with the actual torn bits of paper, blade, and crude sketches of the what the background texture would be and face would be.
The graphite when applied to the gesso acts more like charcoal would on paper, easier to get high contrast and can be brushed around easily.
